WELL Gold for ASICS HQ

The new headquarters of sports and lifestyle brand ASICS in Hoofddorp has achieved WELL Core and Shell Gold certification in April 2020.

This is the 11th building in the Netherlands to receive such a certificate, making it one of the healthiest offices in our country. Starting points for the new headquarters were sport, health, collaboration and transparency. The design was made by Powerhouse; Deerns was a member of the design team and was responsible for advising on LEED and WELL certification, and for the design of the mechanical and electrical installations.

Advanced, sustainable and healthy was the ambition for the new building. To demonstrably fulfil this ambition, LEED certification (sustainability) and WELL certification for the health aspect were chosen. The combination of both certifications was pioneering, given that it has only been implemented to a limited extent worldwide. The design team created a building that contributes to a better living environment through limited energy and water consumption and CO2 emissions. By focusing on a healthy indoor climate, comfort and variety of the working environment, the building also contributes to employee well-being. The latter is achieved, among other things, by optimal air quality, ample daylighting and a corresponding artificial lighting design, the selection of materials and an attractive staircase that encourages use.

‘Core and Shell’ certification

Deerns supervised the WELL Core and Shell certification on behalf of the developer, RED Company. Thanks in part to the high-quality W and E design, air quality, water quality, thermal comfort and noise levels in the building more than meet WELL requirements. More information on the project can be found here. The next step for ASICS is WELL Interior certification. ASICS shares the garden and car park with its neighbour Danone, for which Deerns also designed the installations and advises and coordinates the WELL certification.

WELL Building Standard

The WELL Building Standard sets requirements for air quality, light and thermal & acoustic comfort as well as water quality, nutrition, exercise & activity and mental health. All these aspects have a demonstrable effect on people's well-being and are underpinned by scientific research. The WELL Building Standard is a performance-based hallmark for measuring, certifying and monitoring the built environment and its effect on people's health. With the aim of buildings that offer demonstrable benefits for the health and well-being of the people working in them. Deerns has had WELL Accredited Professionals in-house since the end of 2016.
